When night falls in the
city of Philadelphia, some people feel the primal urge to
surround themselves with hundreds of people, dancing and
gyrating to the latest bass-driven beats. If you love to
dance and aren't afraid to do it in public, then Philadelphia
was tailor-made for you. The majority of the clubs are
right on the river, down on what used to be called Delaware
Avenue (the street is named after Columbus these days).
We've established this page as a guide to help you figure out
what's out there and where you would like to be.
Maui Entertainment
Complex
Pier 53 North, 1143 Delaware Avenue
(215)423-8116
Maui is one of the city's
most popular clubs, and for good reasons; it's also one of the
best. It attracts the twentysomething crowd with its
tropical setting and groovy beats, and serves as the best way
for lonely, energetic hearts to come together and find one
another. With more bikinis and beauty than you could shake
a stick at, along with an indoor-outdoor setting and
accomplished DJs, you're guaranteed a great time. Live
music is also a feature on certain nights, which attracts a
different sort of crowd, but it's all in the name of fun and
cutting loose. What more can we say...get there!
Rock Lobster
Pier 13 and 14, 221 North Delaware Avenue
(215)627-7625
Rock Lobster, an
interesting club that's open from May through September, sort of
resembles a yacht club as far as image and facade is concerned.
It mainly draws a crowd of thirtysomethings, and offers dining,
dancing, and great music. This is fun because you can go
here and pretend to be rich and famous and see if your act can
draw a suitable trophy boy/girl. Go, have fun, and see
what the Lobster's all about.
Monte Carlo Living Room
2nd and South Streets
(215)925-2220
The Monte Carlo Living
Room has one of the best names in the city, and it's also one of
Philly's finer clubs. Before we get any further, don't
expect to come waltzing in the place dressed in a feathered boa;
jacket and tie are required and the policy is rather strictly
enforced. What you'll find is a building that caters to
the older crowd and showcases European and South American music
in addition to the usual fare. The emphasis on the entire
club is European, so perhaps the best thing to do is throw on a
fake accent and dive right in. Definitely fun if you're
into dressing up nice and having a good time; we heartily
recommend it.
Dave and Buster's
Pier 19 North, 325 Delaware Avenue
(215)413-1951
Looking for a little
variety? Definitely check out Dave and Buster's on
Delaware Ave. In addition to the usual dancing and
grinding and boozing, D+B's offers up pool tables, bars, fine
food, and pinball. Yes, pinball, along with all kinds of
virtual reality machines and arcade games and everything else.
For this reason, it's ideal for those who are bored with merely
boogying and need to be wandering around. Convince a
friend who's not normally into "the scene" to join
you, and you're in business. Enjoy yourself, and bring
plenty of quarters.
