The Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum provides an excellent venue for exploring the history, artifacts, and culture of African Americans in the United States.  The focus is on the state of Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia in particular, which makes for a personal atmosphere that everyone can and should have the opportunity to appreciate.

The museum first opened it’s doors in 1976 and features both permanent and changing exhibits, as well as a fantastic jazz series each year.  It is the first museum in the nation of its kind that was both built and completely funded by a city rather than a private collector or group of wealthy collaborators. Current featured attractions include spotlights on female sculptors from the area as well as Philadelphia sports icons.  The vast range of individual talent allows for a well-rounded cultural experience, and appeals to all visitors rather than niche groups.

The gift shop is also worthy of special mention, offering the Pennsylvania area's widest collection of books and art;  truly something for everyone.  Do yourself a favor and don't miss out of one of the city's boldest and possibly most overlooked attraction.
